The 600MHz spectrum release is unlikely before 2030, delaying billion-dollar auctions as 5G monetisation remains weak.

Proposed spectrum release for mobile communications
Australian households without fixed broadband (2024)
This report analyses the Australian Government's recent announcement regarding the exploration of future broadcasting arrangements for the 600MHz UHF band. While the 2020 Media Reform Green Paper envisioned releasing up to 84MHz of spectrum for mobile communications, significant policy and technical barriers remain. With 15% of Australian households still lacking fixed broadband and 26% never using BVOD, a rapid transition from terrestrial broadcast is unlikely. The delay of this billion-dollar auction is viewed as a strategic benefit for telecommunications operators currently facing low returns on 5G investment.
