Proportion of Australian dwellings that are detached houses
Total number of households participating in the ethnographic study
This report analyzes the lived experiences of 31 Australian households that have adopted smart home technologies. Based on an academic-industry partnership with Intel Corporation, the research explores three central concepts: protection, productivity, and pleasure (the 3Ps). Findings indicate that while 'protection' is rarely used as a term, it is the primary driver through security and care for family members. The study highlights gendered divisions in 'digital housekeeping' and the potential for smart home features to undermine energy efficiency goals.
