Edge Computing – decentralising the cloud but not replacing it

This report analyses the rise of edge computing as a necessary extension of the technology cycle to support the massive scale of IoT. With more than 250mn connected devices expected in Australia by 2021, traditional centralised cloud platforms face challenges in latency, bandwidth, and real-time analysis. Edge computing provides the solution by placing processing capabilities near the data source, enabling a hybrid model where the cloud and edge work together to manage unprecedented data volumes and sophisticated applications.
