Australia Consumer Broadband Pricing – Q1 FY24 Update

During Q1, nbn submitted another iteration of its proposed Special Access Undertaking (SAU). We also note that Vision Networks, a competitor to nbn, proposes to lower its wholesale pricing to undercut nbn’s proposed new pricing. If the SAU changes are accepted by the ACCC, we may therefore see price changes in retail nbn (and in Vision’s competing retail plans) as early as the December 2023 quarter.

Retail nbn offers in market were broadly similar to those observed in our earlier ’Australian Consumer Broadband Pricing 2023 – Pricing Trends’ report, with a focus on offers that provide discounted monthly plan fees for customers taking higher speed tiers such as nbn’s Superfast and Ultrafast tiers. Optus has increased the price of its entry level nbn bundle, widening the gap between its home wireless and nbn plans.

Lastly, Starlink has begun offering a half-price hardware offer – for customers willing to accept refurbished hardware. While there may be good commercial reason to sell refurbished hardware, we are intrigued by how Starlink finds itself with sufficient volume of refurbished hardware for such an offer.
