Smart speaker threat to radio foreshadows a new media ecosystem

TLDR version: Smart speakers are becoming a major delivery platform for the radio industry. As with the FTA TV industry, the growing gatekeeper power of device operators is a threat to the industry and the public objectives that it serves. The smart speaker industry is dominated by global tech companies that have little commitment to local news and/or culture. For this reason, we expect radio to become the next battleground over prominence. The UK’s draft Media Bill, currently under consideration, provides some clues about the future of radio prominence provisions. What is ultimately at stake is the survival of a local, Australian media industry.
