BRIEF: TV broadcast shutdown on the agenda in New Zealand

Abstract: The New Zealand Ministry for Culture & Heritage stated in its “Briefing for the incoming Minister for Media and Communications 2024” last month that the New Zealand FTA TV industry is working on a transition strategy away from digital terrestrial transmission (DTT) to online delivery of free-to-air television. Subsequently, industry operators have confirmed that a transition is under consideration. But there are some major obstacles, particularly in rural settings. In Australia, these obstacles are even greater, and may lead to divergent paths for the two markets.
