Abstract:  The availability of reliable and objective news & current affairs reporting is a key objective of media policy. This objective is under threat from many directions, but especially from social media mis-and disinformation. Declining news gathering capacity in commercial media organisations is another issue. This suggests that public broadcasting will inevitably become more important. The implication is that the Federal Government will need to re-commit to public broadcasting as part of a broader policy to strengthen the news ecosystem.
