TLDR version: Low Earth Orbit Satellites (LEOSats) are already being used to provide broadband services to remote areas of Australia. An emerging use of LEOsats is providing services direct to mobile handsets using the same connectivity used for connecting to terrestrial mobile networks. This is a new revenue opportunity for telcos, but they will face competition from other ecosystem players. ‘Direct to handset’ services may also increase mobile competition in regional areas – though this will likely be late in the 2020’s and will depend on the price and performance of the voice and data services eventually delivered.
