TLDR version: Amazon has told FTA TV services that future delivery of their apps on Fire TV device will incur a 30% levy on all future ad revenue that FTA TV networks generate on the device. The FTA TV industry has rejected this “offer”, and it is more likely that the FTA networks will withdraw from the platform. The major risk to the FTA TV industry is that this might set a precedent amongst video device operators, but that is not the biggest issue. If this levy were to become industry practice, the federal government’s broadcasting policy objectives would be compromised – which is why it probably won’t happen.
