Avoiding tunnel vision in international broadband comparisons

TLDR version: Australia’s fixed broadband penetration fell in 2022 according to the OECD, with the nation dropping to 23^rd among 38 member states. This remains broadly in line with its historic position. Australia ranked more poorly on broadband speeds, particularly its low share of services 100Mbps and faster.

Lifting broadband speeds will require focus, however it’s important that policy makers don’t get tunnel vision when it comes to comparing our international performance. We believe Australia could take a lesson from Europe and develop a more holistic index for tracking the development of the nation’s digital infrastructure and capability.
