While Virtual Assistants (VA) have existed since 2011, the category only took off after recent advances in Artificial Intelligence and the introduction of the smart speaker.

Major players like Apple, Google, Microsoft and Amazon already have their own Virtual Assistants. Asian players are now developing their own.

The Microsoft-Amazon collaboration may gain them the edge needed to overcome the slew of new and entrenched players.
