REPORT: NBN plans — Jockeying for position

With the NBN now available to one sixth of Australian households, telecommunication carriers are battling aggressively for market share.
As the rollout of the NBN accelerates, Australian telecommunications carriers are fighting aggressively to secure market share in the post-NBN world.  Venture Insights has reviewed the NBN plans being offered by a cross-section of five largest carriers to see what they tell us about the competitive landscape

Key takeaways

Australian Telcos competing for share of NBN pie: Whilst there is a lot of variation at the premium end of the market, the carriers are all remarkably similarly priced at the value end of the market.
Strength of offering will determine market position … over time: Although we expect that quality of service and value will be a key factor in determining market share over time, plans have been designed to give ‘headline price’ options.
Something from everyone for everyone: The NBN has not brought simplicity.  Telstra alone has 108 different plan combinations.  Whilst this means something for everyone, it does not make life easier for the consumer.
The have and have nots: While some carriers position their offering as premium products, competition is reducing pricing gaps at the entry level.
Laws of attraction: Whilst many bundles are attractive for customers, many less competitive offers are still in the market.
